A group of photographers operating in New Zealand have managed to photograph photographs of crimson flashes, counted as the rarest atmospheric displays on Earth, where luminous crimson flashes appear in the atmosphere.

A Remarkable Night of Discovery

The photographers initially planned to capture the galactic core over the unique geological structures in the lower part of the country on a night in October, before encountering the rare phenomenon.

They thought they would be blessed to get optimal conditions that after-dark period, but their shooting session became “a night to remember,” an individual involved stated.

While reviewing his files for a stellar landscape and realized he had photographed scarlet atmospheric flashes,” the photographer explained. “We just could not believe it – there was a whole bunch of joyful noises and various reactions in the darkness.”

Defining Red Sprites

These crimson flashes are atmospheric energy releases in the higher atmospheric layers, generated by electrical storms. Unlike lightning that aims at the earth, red sprites ascend towards the higher altitudes, creating structures that resemble columns, tapered shapes or even jellyfish. The initial image of a red sprite was recorded – by chance – in that year, by a team at the a academic organization.

Momentary and Dreamlike Sightings

They are so brief – lasting just a millisecond – that they are infrequently observed to the naked eye, but an individual was fortunate. “By chance, I was gazing right at an occurrence when it occurred – just a perfect coincidence viewing the right part of the heavens and I saw a momentary scarlet burst,” he said.

Observing the phenomena was a dream for this individual, an award-winning night scape photographer. “It appears as if you witness an impossible sight, it’s very ethereal … the color is a profound crimson that is present only momentarily, so it’s really interesting to see.”

Photographing a red sprite demands a mastery of specialized camera skills, as well as an understanding of scientific principles and creative flare, the photographer explained. “This is a highly complex form of imaging that’s very rewarding as well.”
